Prolam PL8 Beams |
Homeowner Jason Barnes and his family purchased the property more than a decade ago, drawn to its sweeping views over Maraetai Beach and the surrounding countryside. What began as two relocated 80-year-old houses evolved over time into a completely rebuilt home – with only the original floor remaining from the initial renovation.
The result is a modern home that pays homage to the homes of yesteryear, complete with a wrap-around veranda almost as large as the house itself. The veranda, together with the home’s strong architectural lines, creates a timeless aesthetic that complements its coastal hinterland setting.
Prolam engineered timber plays a key role in both the structure and character of the home. Prolam Glulam Beams and H5 CodeMark Posts were used to construct the expansive veranda, with the posts extending up to six metres into the ground to provide the strength and support needed on the gently sloping block.
In the original specification, [steel beams?] encased to resemble timber were proposed. However, Jason and his builder wanted a more authentic timber solution, that would also save time and cost. When they consulted the team at their local Placemakers, they were introduced to Prolam glulam and knew they had found the solution.
As Jason says: “The Prolam beams and posts provided a strong, beautiful solution that gave us the look we wanted – with less time, cost and complexity.”
Due to the construction schedule, the posts went in the ground prior to the handrails being measured and manufactured. When it came time to install the rails in the final stages of the build, builder Darryl was impressed. Precision-engineered for straightness and stability, the posts had stayed true and not moved at all, and the handrails fitted seamlessly.
Jason painted the 30 posts which support the veranda himself – a labour of love that reflects the family’s personal connection to the home and its craftmanship.
This dedication, and the integrity and care taken in the design and selection of materials for his family’s home, not only adds to its charm but ensures it will stand strong for another 80 years or more.
“The wrap-around veranda is one of our favourite features of the home. People like it and the kids are always playing on it.”
