Specify with certainty: NZS/AS 1720.1:2022 Timber Structures Standard

The latest update to the Prolam Specifier allows you to perform calculations in accordance with the new NZS/AS 1720 Timber Structures Standard and includes extra features to help you design and specify products with confidence and ease.

The Prolam Specifier has been updated to reflect the Timber Structures Standard (NZS/AS 1720.1:2022) which recognises engineered timber like glulam is an “exciting renewable resource for innovative building design”*.

The latest version of the Prolam Specifier ensures your calculations conform with the new Standard which provides for the increased use of timber within building design and brings New Zealand up-to-date with international best practice in timber design.

As we made the changes to the Prolam Specifier calculators, we also took the opportunity to update their performance and functionality to deliver enhanced results for many common design situations.

Products, options, and solutions on the Prolam Specifier

New Prolam products including our Exposed Trusses and our breakthrough glulam timber bracing solution, the PLX Portal, are able to be specified using the Prolam Specifier with the PLX Portal automatically added to calculation results where it can be used. You can also specify H1.2 Beams which are ideal for indoor exposed rafters and have the option to select SG8 Sawn Timber for simple lintel, roof, and floor members.

Prolam’s design service provides specifically engineered solutions for exposed trusses, complex beams, lintels and posts, and bracing portals that are beyond the capability of the fixed Specifier calculators and require a specific engineering design (SED) by a structural engineer.

Design Requests, including Exposed Truss Design Requests, can be submitted, and managed, via the Specifier – giving you seamless access to Prolam’s expertise in designing structural timber elements in fast turnaround times. In this latest update, we’ve made some changes to the standard truss design forms to simplify the process even further.

Other new features

We’re committed to providing easy, fast, and accurate calculations and product specifications, and many updates are based on specific customer feedback and requests.

The latest update – Version 2.3.0 – includes a revised dashboard layout which ensures you can easily see recent Design Requests, projects, and calculations, and identify Active Projects.

The most recent update also enables you to:

  • Re-order and rename saved calculations – Allowing you to organise calculations on projects with many entries.
  • Factor in cladding on bracing posts – Allowing you to factor stone or masonry cladding into the specification of bracing posts.
  • Filter results tables – This enables you to filter calculation results by product types and widths, making it easier to explore the options and choose the optimal member for your project.
  • Use our Raking lintel calculator – To design raking lintels above sloping windows and doors in the gable end of a building.
  • Design lintels with girder trusses supporting attic trusses – A recent addition to the girder truss calculator this feature also eliminates the need for an SED solution.
  • Specify MCA Treatment – Providing you with the option to treat members with MCA (a more environmentally friendly treatment).
  • Submit ideas or feedback – Enabling you to make suggestions or vote on ideas submitted by other users and help us keep improving the Specifier!

Don’t forget! We provide free training on how to use the Prolam Specifier or if you simply want to get up to speed on new products and features.
